The fire station was built in 1978 and was originally designated as Station No. 20. In 2005 it was renumbered as Station No. 5, which moved it from the supervision of Battalion 2 to the Battalion 1 Chief.
The suppression compliment includes Engine No. 5, a 2017 Rosenbauer Commander.
The medical compliment includes Medic No. 5, a 2019 Freightliner.
In July 2025 the station’s Special Operations designation was moved to Station No. 23, 9090 N. 30th Street.
The fire station responds to North Omaha, including the North 24th & Lake Historic District, established in the 1860s and considered one of the oldest commercial areas outside of downtown Omaha.
The station is known to receive emergency requests throughout the night, which led to their nickname, the Nighthawks.
