Omaha annexed South Omaha in 1915. This firehouse originally served as South Omaha Fire Station No. 1. Exact date it opened as South Omaha Fire Station No. 1 is unknown. It was torn down in 1948 and a new fire station built on the original foundation. The new firehouse opened on February 7, 1949. It was a 4 bay single story structure with concrete walls. At the time the United States was experiencing the Cold War with Russia and due to a common sentiment of the possibility of a nuclear attack the firehouse was constructed with the mindset that it could be used as a fallout shelter. When it opened in 1949 it was quarters for Engine No. 5, Truck No. 6, Rescue Squad No. 2 and the South Battalion Chief. It later was renumbered Station 31 (1/31/1966), Station 14 (9/1/1998) and back to Station 31 (7/20/2005. It remained an active firehouse until a new Fire Station 31 was constructed at 34th and Q Street in 2022. It has been listed on the National Registry of Historical Places and is vacant.
