Station No. 3, 19th & Harney

Fire Station No. 3 was opened on January 29, 1914.  Fire Station No. 3 also served as fire department headquarters.  For 20 years prior fire department headquarters/Fire Station No. 3 were located in a rented building located at 322 South 18th Street.  It was a 2 story brick structure with 4 apparatus bays onto Harney Street and a double bay on 19th Street that was used by the fire chief.  When opened it became quarters for Hose No. 3 that was motorized prior to moving from 322 South 18th and believed to be the first motorized fire apparatus in Omaha.  Fire Station No. 3 (1824 Harney) became quarters for several truck companies over time.  The longest being Truck No. 8 from 1934 to 1963.  The on duty assistant chief (Fire Car 2), all administrative and bureau personnel worked from Fire Station No. 3.  When Rescue Squad No. 1 was placed in service on June 6, 1936 it was quartered at Fire Station No. 3 until the firehouse was deactivated on April 3, 1967.  The building was demolished to make way for the Omaha/Douglas County Civic Center.
