Station No. 10 opened on May 19, 1939. The single story brick 2 bay firehouse replaced the former Station No. 10 located at Ed Creighton and Park Ave that opened in 1891. It remained a single engine house until 1947 when Omaha Fire Department purchased a unit called a quad that was manufactured by American LaFrance Corporation and designated as Engine No. 10. The unit was a combination engine and ground ladder truck with a pump and a 150 gallon water tank. On November 16, 1950 Truck No. 9 was organized and the 1947 Quad was relocated to Station No. 14 and became Engine No. 14. Although the new Truck No. 9 unit was very similar to the quad unit it responded as a traditional ladder/truck company. This firehouse remained an active firehouse until February 22, 1966. The building has remained city property since opening as Fire Station No. 10. After the building was closed as a firehouse, the Douglas County Department of Vital records relocated here until the new Omaha/Douglas County Civic Center opened in the early 1970’s. For over 30 years it was home to The Omaha Softball Association. For that time period Omaha was known as the softball capitol of the world. Hundreds of adult fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball teams competed throughout the Omaha area and the building was used as a place where scheduling, umpire training and team meetings were held. In 2012 the Omaha Softball Association vacated the building and the Omaha Fire Department, with the approval of Fire Chief Mike McDonnell, returned to Fire Station No. 10. Currently the Omaha Fire Department Public Education Department, Fire Prevention and the offices/historical artifacts of the Omaha Firefighters Historical Society are located here.
