John Francis Conry, Jr., age 73, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown under the care of Iowa River Hospice.
John was born September 3, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska to parents John F. Sr. and Dorothy (Langdon) Conry. Following his graduation from Benson High School in Omaha in 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country for four years. Upon his return, John attended University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. John followed in his father’s footsteps and dedicated his life to the Omaha Fire Department. He retired with full honors as Battalion Chief after 25+ years of service to the department.
In 1993, he met Jill (Voss) McDonald and they were married in 2006. They loved going on adventures together, traveling around the country in their camper and exploring “off the beaten path.” They loved to have fun, living life to the fullest and enjoyed sixteen years of retirement together. Jill and John settled on an acreage in Neola, Iowa, where John enjoyed spending time outside, working on projects and taking care of his beloved cats.
In addition to his adventurous side, John also loved reading, especially books about history and nature. He grew up in the Catholic church, and his faith was always very important to him. A healthy lifestyle was also a priority, eating well and exercising. He loved to stay active: biking, hiking, snow skiing, swimming and of course, his daily two-mile walks. John truly enjoyed just about everything outdoors, especially the extreme peace and serenity that often could be found there.
John was kind, generous and very supportive with his family. The qualities that excelled him in his career also made him a loyal and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched, including his wife of 17 years, Jill Conry; his son, Joseph “Joe” (Miao) Conry of Dallas, TX; son-in-law Scott (Jay) Dressman of Cincinnati, OH; stepchildren: Lori (Cory) Brauschweig of Adel, IA and Jarrod (Elizabeth) McDonald of Van Meter, IA; granddaughter Ginger and seven step-grandchildren; his three sisters: Susan (Ted) Conry Schneiderwind, Janet (Wayne) Conry Mohring and Caroline Conry Ollie, all of Omaha; stepmother, Gerry Conry; several nieces and nephews and of course, his coworkers that became family at the Omaha fire department.
In eternal life he is reunited with his daughter, Barbara Conry Dressman and his parents.
