Gator Fun Run Brings Community Together at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

Nearly 160 participants braved the 23-degree morning chill to take part in Captain Fleming’s First Annual 5K Gator Fun Run, held at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium.

The event began at 8:00 a.m. with the National Anthem, performed by Omaha Fire Department’s own Dani Landholm. Runners and families were treated to a lively and unforgettable course through the zoo’s grounds. While the race was not officially timed, Chance Rohda and Dan Honz crossed the finish line together in 23 minutes and 30 seconds. “A cheetah jumped down off a rock and paced us along the fence,” Honz said, describing one of the memorable sights along the route.

The family-friendly run also featured playful “alligators” who added excitement by chasing children along the course. Despite the surprise wildlife encounters, the event maintained a festive, carnival-like atmosphere. Runner Mike Quinlan summed it up best: “This is the hardest and best 5K I’ve ever done.”

The Omaha Fire Department extends its gratitude to the staff of Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium for providing an outstanding venue, as well as to the sponsors, runners, and volunteers who made the event possible. Special recognition is given to the members of OFD Station No. 3, the “First Due at the Zoo,” for their enthusiastic support and contributions throughout the morning.
